Introduction to Sports Photography - Two 3 hour sessions

Suitable for aspiring professionals and proud parents, this two part workshop will introduce students to the peculiarities of fast-action sports photography.
Part one will include an overview of professional photography equipment, but will focus mainly on getting the most out of the SLR camera equipment that you already own.  By studying a variety of published sports photographs, we will cover the basics of ISO, shutter speed & aperture settings for various sport venues.  Lens selection, shooting and editing strategies will also be presented. Students will be encouraged to shoot sports on their own during the week and return to session two with images.
  Part two will be a review and critique of the students' own photographs produced during the field assignments.  Using a digital projector we will, as a group, evaluate each photographer's technique, timing, editing, cropping and image finishing.
Students should bring their own cameras & user manuals to each class.

Edward McCann's "Creative Photography" course will challenge a person to take, at least, one great photograph, rather than just a series of good photographs. These sessions will be an exploration of photography in both the historical and contemporary context. Students will develop their own vision and understanding of the medium through discussion and practice.

This course introduces beginners to the creative and technical possibilities of digital photography. Through a series of demonstrations and practical assignments students will acquire a solid understanding of their camera while enhancing their own creativity.
The course will feature discussions about exposure, depth of field, basic lighting, night photography, freezing and stopping motion, composition, editing software and much more.
Please bring a digital SLR camera and your manual.


WORKSHOPS

This weekend workshop will explore the technical and practical aspects of environmental portraiture. An emphasis will be placed on the study of lighting with both natural and artificial light sources. Students will venture out of the studio with models and use a variety of lighting equipment to explore their own creative vision.
We will also spend time in the studio looking at, and discussing portraiture and considering various approaches and techniques.
Students will leave this workshop with increased confidence and greater understanding of working with, and photographing people.
Pre-requisite: A solid understanding of the camera. (film or digital)
Materials: Camera and samples of your portraits or portraits from photographers that inspire you

These days, more photographers are leaving their studio lights at home in favor of lighting with small electronic flashes. This 3 hour workshop will take students through various small flash techniques both on and off the camera. From fill flash to off camera techniques, students will gain a greater understanding of this little, creative and powerful piece of equipment.
Students should bring their camera (SLR), flashes and manuals.

This one-day workshop starts with a complete overview of how your digital camera works. We begin with an in depth review of the camera's controls and functioins followed by a hands-on shooting session in the local area. Images will be reviewed with constructive feedback on compositioin and exposer. You will come away from this intense and fun seminar with a whole new understanding of both the technical and aesthetic principles of photography.

This course offers an introduction and overview to your digital point and shoot camera. We will begin with the basic set-up and operation of your camera and go through the advanced shooting modes as well. The class will finish up with practical shooting tips and a discussion on filing/organizing and printing your pictures.

INSTRUCTORS

BRIAN HOWELL
Brian earned a B.A.A. in Still Photography from Ryerson Polytechnical University (1994). Soon afterward he was selected one of two Canadians selected to attend the prestigious (juried) Eddie Adams Workshop in New York.
Since then his work has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers and galleries. He has been awarded for both his editorial/magazine portraiture and his photojournalism work. Brian's photographs have been published, collected and exhibited internationally. He is the author of two books and has done charity work for the CNIB, Photosensitive, and The Surrey Women's Centre.
Brian has lectured at various institutions including, Vanarts, NSCAD, Mount Alison, and Langara College where he also taught a course.
He brings 20 years of experience, passion, humor, and practice to the classroom.

EVAN SEAL
Evan has worked as a professional photographer for more than 20 years. Upon completing four years at the University of Victoria and six months travelling throughout Australia and New Zealand, Evan enrolled at the Western Pacific Academy of Photography in 1988 where he earned the Ted Grant award for the school's top photojournalism student.
After months freelancing in the greater Victoria area he was hired as a staff photographer/darkroom technician at the Campbell River Courier Upper Islander newspaper on Vancouver Island.
In 1991 he moved to Metro Vancouver to take a staff photography position at the Surrey/North Delta Leader newspaper. During his many years at the Leader, Evan has photographed everything from the city’s homeless to prime ministers and celebrities. He has been awarded numerous provincial, national and North American awards for newspaper photojournalism. He has given many workshops in photography and has taught Digital photography for the past two years.
Currently he lives with his wife and three children on a small farm in Mission B.C. about an hour and a half east of Vancouver.
